Information for Teachers of TOLES Exams
Do I need a legal background in order to teach the TOLES exams?
The Lawyer’s English Language Coursebook was carefully developed to give total support to any teacher of the TOLES exams at Foundation and Higher level. This means that any proficient teacher can guide students to success in the two lower levels of the exam. However, we do recommend that a teacher of TOLES Advanced should have a legal background.
What level of general English do my students need to take the TOLES exams?
The exam series is designed to allow every student of legal English to make a start at gaining a certificate. The Foundation exam is a huge support towards learning legal vocabulary and students can do well in the exam even if they are just at the stage of learning basic grammar structures. We try to avoid complications such as perfect tenses or conditional sentences at this level, to give students the opportunity to focus on vocabulary. The Higher exam requires at least an intermediate level of general English and the Advanced exam requires high intermediate to advanced general English. If you are in doubt, please email our office for further guidance.
Does a student have to take all 3 exams?
No, a student may take the Higher or Advanced exam without completing Foundation. However, we do recommend that all students use our standard coursebook, The Lawyer’s English language Coursebook, as preparation for all 3 exams.
Remember, accuracy is as important as fluency to a leading law firm.
What level is the Advanced exam in the Common European framework?
The Advanced exam has been assessed at levels B2 to C2.
However, it is important to bear in mind that legal English is a very different language from general English. A student may have very strong general English skills but without following an appropriate course of study he or she may not necessarily be ready for TOLES Advanced.
How can I best prepare students for the TOLES Advanced exam?
We have available one book of Practice Papers for TOLES Advanced. This book demonstrate the insistence of accuracy that is the common theme of the TOLES series.
How can my school become a registered centre for the TOLES exams?
