TOLES Higher tests a candidate’s ability to use the legal vocabulary that they have learned from TOLES Foundation level in an accurate and appropriate way. In Paper 1, vocabulary is now tested in the authentic context of contracts and letters as well as in more traditional exam exercises. To encourage accuracy, correct use of collocation is emphasised and prepositions are tested. Letter writing skills are tested in a controlled way, to focus on vocabulary, style and register. Knowledge of contract vocabulary and grammar is continued from Foundation level. In Paper 2, the skills of listening for comprehension and listening for specific vocabulary are tested.
